RDBN Budgets for Landfill Clean Up

The Regional District has plans to finish closing the Burns Lake Landfill this year.

The site hasn't been used for around five years but Hans Berndorff, RDBN's financial administrator says it takes time and money to cap off the area properly. "They have to reslope the whole site to make sure drainage happens properly and water doesn't collect anywhere. They have to cap it with a certain amount of clay. That clay provides a liner so that rain water doesn't get into the old garbage site."

Berndorff says $300 000 has been set aside in this year's budget to get the job done. It should be completed by the end of the year.Residents can continue using the transfer station at the site to get rid of their garbage.
